When to Use Duration Trackers

No matter their goals, there’s a good chance your clients need your help better managing one thing - their time. To those who believe “you can’t manage what you don’t measure,” we say, let’s talk about how you could best be using custom Duration Trackers with your clients to track time.

This week we’re exploring some of our favorite use cases for setting up Duration Trackers for your clients. Join us and find out when and why Durations Trackers can be a great fit for your clients on their journey to becoming their best selves.

Reflection

We concluded this week that creating Duration trackers for clients is the best option for clients in a couple of general cases:

(1) When your goal is to significantly raise a client’s awareness or mindfulness of certain behavior or habit - especially how much of it (when there’s likely a misconception)

ex. Having a client focused on productivity track Uninterrupted Deep Work (They’ll probably track less than they expect if they haven’t been mindful of it before).

(2) When a new goal for the amount of a key habit or behavior has been set and a feeling of high personal accountability is helpful

ex. That same productivity client has learned they aren’t getting the Uninterrupted Deep Work bouts they need, and you’ve now set a new daily goal for them for the next week.

What might not be best is leaving a Duration Tracker set up for client like this daily over the long term.

After they’ve shown progress and the new behavior is set, we recommend switching to a less detailed option to make the tracking experience easier.

For example, in a Maintenance Program we might switch this to a Select One tracker called “Did You Hit Your Deep Work Goal Today?” with only Yes and No as the options. This is more sustainable over the long run because it creates less friction for your client.

Here’s more on using Select One trackers and why they make so much sense for Maintenance Programs.
